STABILANT 22

Stabilant 22 is an electronic contact enhancer that is initally non-conductive, but becomes conductive under the effect of an electrical field while staying non-conductive between adjacent contact points.

As a contact enhancer, it improves the conductivity, reliability and functionality of all metal connectors. With the need to only use 1-2 drops to solve the majority of problems, along with a 15 year shelf life, Stabilant 22 is a cost effective long term solution for contact/connector problems.

To find out how Stabilant 22 can help you, there are many application notes that explore different uses that could be of benefit. To learn more, we suggest taking a look at application note #1 to start then to explore from there.

A thin film of Stabilant 22, applied to connectors, reduces or eliminates problems related to poor conductivity. Stabilant 22 coats the mating surfaces of the contacts and fills the gaps between the original scattered point contacts. Stabilant acts as a conductor in these scattered points and thus broadens the effective contact area thereby substantially improving signal integrity. At the same time, Stabilant 22 seals the connection against dirt, grit and environmentally born materials which cause tarnish and corrosion. Stabilant 22 remains chemically stable. It does not break down, evaporate, varnish, or react with any other chemical treatments previously used on the contacts. Nor is there any spillover of conductivity - Stabilant 22 acts as a conductor only between the mating, charged connections. Stabilant 22 is also easy to apply. It needs no elaborate applicators, just the dab of a brush or a drop to the contact area.

Nonmigrating, and with a very low vapor pressure, Stabilant 22 will often outlast the useful life of the equipment. Connectors are an integral part of any electronic system. Treatment with Stabilant 22 will impart the reliability of a soldered joint to any electromechanical connections without forming a physical bond. Whether you need improved performance, lowered service costs or are just looking for peace of mind, Stabilant 22 will become your go to solution to bring reliability to your connections and electronic equipment.

Contact Area v3 edit.jpg

When looking at the mating surfaces of a contact they appear to be perfectly uniform.

When the contact interface is magnified you'll see peaks and valleys, essentially an irregular surface which scatters contact points across the connector. These uneven contact surfaces cause unpredictable contact resistance which ultimately leads to system malfunction.

WHY CONNECTORS EXPERIENCE INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS OR FAIL

Temperature

Vibration

Humidity

Contamination

Differential Pressure

Migration - Dendrite formation

Corrosion - Dry, Galvanic, Pore, Creep, Fretting

Creep Failure

Wear - Adhesive, Abrasive, Corrosive, Fretting

Frictional Polymerization

Highly sensitive low power electronic systems suffer when connector reliability is poor. Connector conductivity issues can be caused by many factors such as vibration, heat, wear, fretting, contamination, oxidation, corrosion, breakage, etc. When connectors start to malfunction it causes intermittent problems such as erratic electrical behaviour, static, noise, high resistance and signal distortion. Maintenance technicians spend a lot of time solving these problems.

Most connectors ideally consist of perfectly mated metal contacts. But when you see an enlarged image of what connectors actually look like you'll see that connecting surfaces show great irregularity - meaning that contact points are randomly scattered across the contact area of the connector. These uneven contact surfaces cause unpredictable contact resistance which ultimately leads to system malfunction.

On the mechanical side of things, surface coating damage along with the formation of cracks, dimples or pores can lead to serious connector problems. These could be caused by manufacturing defects, stress/differential pressure and/or growths from the contact pins, to name a few. On the chemical side, chemical reactions can lead to corrosive product layers that can alter the chemical behavior of the material and interrupt or weaken signal strength and eventually render the contact inoperable. Finally, on the electrical side, extended periods of use along with temperature variations can lead to contact resistance, a change in surface properties and joint welding. This is not an extensive list, it is merely a few examples of some of the things that can lead to connector failures.
